One of my first full-time positions after completing my music therapy degree was an activity director in a nursing home. Most traditional intake forms ask very little about a person’s music interests but have a lot of space dedicated to hobbies. Most hobbies were identified as being “past interests”. While I lack hard data, the people who seems to adjust more quickly to the nursing home were the people who had a hobby or two they still enjoyed.
Hobbies can serve many roles. Understanding the role a hobby is filling is an important step in setting aside time for your hobbies. This video highlights a few roles a hobby can fill along with steps to setting aside the time required.
Share your hobbies and how you envision them carrying you into your 80’s, 90’s and 100’s.
