May is Older American’s Month. The 2015 theme is “Get Into the Act” is meant to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others.
While music therapists offer services to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to highlight how older adults are engaging with and making a difference in those communities.
This month is also International Drum Month. Drum circles are blooming in senior living communities. Use this simple chant to merge the two observances.
After, warming-up your group, have participants share one thing they like to do, an event in which they enjoy participating, or a volunteer service they offer. These can be included in the verse section.
- Option 1 is to have each person sing the “I like to ______” section.
- Option 2 is to substitute the person’s name for “I”. For example “Herman likes to share tomatoes from his garden.”
